FAQs

What is a Pattern 10 Door?

A Pattern 10 Door is a popular type of internal door that features a large, single-paneled glass window occupying most of the door's surface. It is designed to let natural light flood into a room, making spaces appear brighter and larger. The minimalist design allows for clear visibility, perfect for offices or rooms where light and vision are preferred. It’s commonly available in oak and other premium quality wood types.

What are Traditional French Door Sizes?

The traditional sizes for French Doors in the UK vary slightly but the most common dimensions are 2100mm in height and 1200-1800mm in width. These are standard measurements for a set of two doors that open from the middle. However, at Internal Doors we offer bespoke sizing services, enabling customers to have French Doors made to their unique requirements.

Is it Better to Have French Doors Open In or Out?

The direction in which French Doors should open -- inwards or outwards -- largely depends on individual preferences and spatial constraints. Inward opening doors can save exterior space and are more common in the UK. However, they might occupy significant internal space when opened.

Outwards opening French doors, on the other hand, save interior space but may be affected by extreme weather conditions. Therefore, it is advisable to consider your space and weather patterns when deciding the direction of your French doors.

What is the Difference between a Double Door and a French Door?

While both Double Doors and French Doors feature two doors, the main difference lies in their design and usage. Double Doors usually depict two doors coming together without a central mullion, which is common in commercial environments for practical use.

On the other hand, French Doors are a type of double door, traditionally featuring individual glass panels set into the full length of the door. They are more aesthetically detailed and often used in residential settings, allowing plenty of light into a room and offering a stylish doorway to gardens or balconies. French doors also usually open from the center, providing a wide and welcoming entrance.

Maintenance

Wooden Product Finishing

Our products are supplied fit for purpose and unfinished (unless a pre-finished door has been ordered). As wood is a natural product, sanding and treating maybe required to achieve the perfect finish. If you have not ordered a pre-finished/treated door then we recommend that quality hardwax oils such as TreatexOsmo, or Sikkens Polyurethane Varnish are used to seal and protect the goods and to validate your warranty.

For doors to acclimatise, they should be left in the house prior to installation for at least seven days with the ambient temperature gradually increased over this period.

All of our doors must be treated before they are hung, not afterwards. It is vitally important not to miss areas where the door has been cut for hinges or any other door furniture as this would allow for moisture to get into the door and spread throughout it.

Applying a stain prior to treating is known to highlight the areas where glue may have spread to the face of the door during manufacturing, particulary where veneers meet. This cannot be claimed for under warranty. A clear, hardwax oil is what should be used.

Modern oil finishes are extremely durable and hardwearing, they are very simple to apply and fast drying. Once your appropriate finish has been applied, generally very little maintenance is required. It is always advisable to cover any scratches that may occur over time. The benefit of using hardwax oil is that this is a very simple process of re-applying the finish to the affected area with a cloth.

If you're wanting to paint an unfinished oak veneer door, ideally a White Primed Door should be purchased instead. However, if you do decide to paint an unfinished oak veneer door then to comply with the door's warranty it must have an undercoat/primer and top coat which is solvent based, not water based.

Storage - Flat and Dry Only

As wood is a natural product it is important that it is stored correctly. We recommend that your new products are stored flat and in a dry area. We recommend that all packaging is kept on the products, or removed for inspection and then re applied for storage. Again as wood is a natural product it is susceptible to changes in each room's atmosphere and as such please be mindful of this and take care to avoid damp areas or newly plastered rooms etc. For more detailed information on how to treat you newly delivered doors click here.

Installation
This engineered door must be fitted with a minimum of 3 hinges. This is due to the weight of the product, which can be attributed to the high grade materials used in the construction of the door. Choosing to ignore this requirement will void your warranty.
